Chairperson’s Recap of Day 1 & Day 2 Welcome

9:00 AM Benefits of Big Data in Healthcare: Imaging & Radiology

Dr. James Brink , Professor of Diagnostic Radiology; Chair, Departme, Yale School of Medicine

There is a strong tangible demand for Big Data and imagery by doctors as it reduces the need for unnecessary studies, exams and tests for patients. This session will quantifying how Big Data can help medical professionals everywhere.
• Methods to communicate to potential vendors by evaluating which big data solutions help to manage rapidly growing amounts of data
• Overview of the increased speed of care provided to patients

9:45 AM Past Experiments with Big Data, Competition & Problems

Ramon Peypoch , VP Business Development, Content & Cloud Security, McAfee, Inc.

Radiologists have taken part in implementation of Big Data & Healthcare in the past, but have not been able to work together because there is so much data out there. Images take up so much space that computers cannot handle the capacity it would take for counties, states, and a country. This session will provide an overview of the typical causes of delay including:
• Other systems are slow and lack the speed of current systems
• Several institutions cannot communicate with newer technologies
• No formal processing around data management
• An inability to transmit data back and forth because lack of speed
• Need separate archives for data imagery because they are so large

Networking and Refreshment Break

11:15 AM Leveraging Unorthodox Technologies to Move Large Sets of Data

John Adams , Chief Information Officer, American Board of Radiology

Discussing image rich, case-based exams to radiologists who are either certifying, or re-certifying within their specialties.
• Challenges involving the movement of data from our central servers to each of the individual client systems, which must be done for redundancy purposes when giving a high-stakes exam.
• Most “standard” methods for disseminating large data sets to that many machines created significant logistical problems due to the length of time it would take to send that much data even across a closed 1GB network, estimated in days, not hours.
• A unique way to move large sets of data in an incredibly efficient way, (measured in minutes, not days or hours)
• Even with a centralized database there are scenarios that require moving data between disparate systems, which might be able to leverage the technology that we implemented

12:00 PM Start Small, Then Go BIG

Bob Gourley , Chief Technology Officer, Crucial Point LLC

Start small now and create a roadmap that will allow medical professionals to expand while still implementing a centralized database. A national centralized database is not currently feasible because it could not store that much information. In this session you will learn:
• Setting the stage: Implementing a small centralized repository where databases can communicate and doctors could access them
• Methods to allow data to move the same as everyone else’s
• Overview of the challenges: how to get healthcare companies to comply with one another

Networking Lunch
As more and more data becomes available, there has to be a simultaneous progression of tools to make it usable by other people, and an understanding by those people of what those tools are actually allowing them to do. A centralized architecture from a centralized database would be beneficial for medical practitioners, as the speed in which centralized databases can communicate effects the way in which doctors conduct their studies. In this
session attendees will learn to:
• Determine how to maintain consistency of data from multiple internal and external sources
• Why latency is a problem
• How it is possible
• New opportunities healthcare sees as a result of the availability of a centralized database:
1. Increased operational efficiency
2. Better patient care
3. Identifying and developing new products and services

2:45 PM A Good Concept Becoming a Reality

Bob Gourley , Chief Technology Officer, Crucial Point LLC

Doctors and hospitals need the imagery in order to conduct business, (saving lives,) images could be received within a few seconds. Currently, however, centralized databases in hospitals cannot communicate with one another due to privacy regulations ad well as incompatible software. In order to meet the goals of centralized databases and information sharing a solid infrastructure
needs to be put in place. This session will provide a thorough overview of the benefits, challenges and steps to make this concept a reality.
• Quantifying the benefits that can be realized from a centralized database
• Overcoming existing infrastructure and technology challenges
• Necessary steps to align the IT and business groups and ensure
effective communication

4:15 PM The Full Potential of Big Data in Healthcare

Doug Meil , Chief Software Architect, explorys

From a data point of view, medical organizations have been looking at ways to provide more structure to data that doesn’t reside on the usual patient charts. Data and technology have transformed the way health care providers think, as well as influenced the way in which they conduct exams and studies. In this session you will:
• Create an understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved with implementing Big Data
• Understand how to categorize your data effectively in order to understand insights and data gathered
• How EMR (electronic medical records) can be ‘mined’ online, which include data and images.
• Evaluate how your new data integration initiatives need to tie into your overall information management strategy
